Tigers

The tigers are perhaps the most famous of all the wild animals present in India. It is symbolic because of it’s physical power and is hence worshiped by all animals as the guardian and ruler of the forest. To mark their territories, a tiger urinate or secretes anal gland secretions on trees, bushes and rocks in various places throughout the jungle. In addition to this, they make claw marks on tree trunks. By doing this they alarm other tigers to keep away and avoid physical confrontations.

Elephants

The Corbett national park has about 700 elephants all throughout the jungle. In the summers, the elephants can be seen moving around the jungle in herds of several hundreds.

Elephants are notable for their remarkable intelligence and a very sharp memory. All this is possible because elephants have large brains amongst the entire animal kingdom. Male elephants have long tusks which is the most distinct and versatile organ of the animal. Elephants are herbivorous animals so strictly prefer grasses, leaves, stems of trees, vines, bamboos and other shrubs.

Other Mammals

The Leopard is another large cat that can be found in the Corbett national park. They are much smaller and more graceful as compared to the tigers. They are very adaptable and versatile to a variety of terrains. Leopards are usually found in hilly areas but might also be sighted in the low land of the jungle. They can trap their prey by jumping down from trees.

A Hanuman which is also commonly known as a Langur has a dark face, light body and a very long tail. It is worshiped by the Hindus and can be found in many environments ranging from deserts to forests.Langurs are vegetarian and mainly survive on buds, fruit, leaves, flowers and seeds.

Himalayan Gorals a goat-like animal that can be seen in the Himalayan region at a height of 1,000 to 4,000 m. It lives in small groups on mountainous slopes and can move at high speeds even over the mountains. Gorals are mostly active at dawn and dusk when they feed themselves with leaves, grasses, twigs, nuts and fruits.

Wild boars or the Sus scrofa is the ancestor of the domesticated pigs. They have long, curved canine teeth, commonly known as tusks which they use for digging food. Wild boars feed on fruits, shrubs, roots, tubers, mice, snakes, bird eggs, insects, frogs and carrion. They can be seen moving in groups during daytime as well as nighttime.

Corbett homes an impressive varieties of the birds. The number of birds increases further during winter season due to the arrival of migrant birds like osprey and ducks that come all the way from Europe, East Africa and Central Asia. Not only this, many Himalayan birds take refuge in this national park to escape the extreme conditions prevailing in the mountains during winters.
